Joseph E. Aoun, a leader in higher education policy and a renowned scholar in linguistics, is the seventh President of Northeastern University.
President Aoun has strategically aligned the University’s research enterprise with three global imperatives—health, security, and sustainability. Northeastern’s faculty focus on interdisciplinary research, entrepreneurship, and transforming academic research into commercial solutions for the world’s most pressing problems. During President Aoun’s tenure, the University has realized a 189 percent growth in external research funding, along with approximately 1,500 patent applications filed by faculty and students.
The COVID-19 pandemic solidified that a unified academic health system could benefit Rhode Island and its communities, an idea that had been considered in the past but never fully developed. With Lifespan and Care New England Health System agreeing to merge into a single organization in partnership with Brown University, many questions remain, like: How will a merger impact the cost and level of patient care? What are the long-term economic effects of a merger of this scale? What might the future look like for Rhode Island businesses and consumers?
In this event sponsored by Partnership for Rhode Island, President of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce Laurie White moderates two panel discussions focusing on the merger and its potential impact on the future of healthcare in the Ocean State. The first panel, The Business of Healthcare, will feature insight on the industry impact of the merger from top executives involved with the deal. Panel two, What Could Rhode Island Expect Post-Merger?, will spotlight experts in hospital mergers as they consider how the deal will affect the state’s economy, level of care, and much more.
